The district heating network in the town of Bad Neuenahr was damaged by the once-in-a-century flood in the Ahr Valley. To reconnect the district heating network, Augel installed two jacketed heat pipes as casing pipes using a flush-drilling method beneath the Ahr River.

Construction Timeline

Big diameter poses a challenge

Due to the large diameter of the casing pipe (DN500), the flushing borehole had to be enlarged a total of seven times.

The engineers used a suction dredger to remove the drill cuttings and flushing fluid.

Even the actual district heating pipes were pulled in using the drilling rig and consisted of multilayer HDPE pipes. The installation radius of the casing pipes measured 480 meters.

Working two-shift schedules

Given the urgency following the flood, the work was completed in two shifts to enable rapid completion.

Thanks to the close cooperation of all parties involved and their dedicated efforts under challenging conditions, the project was successfully completed. The project paved the way for future heat supply and made a valuable contribution to the reconstruction of the Ahr Valley.
